Bairnsdale Regional Health Service acting Environmental Services Manager, Sandra Holland and Head Chef Food Services, Cameron Penwill, were manning the Cytotoxic Awareness Week stand at the hospital on Wednesday last week. Staff from Oncology, Pharmacy, Risk and Safety, Nursing Education and Environmental Services staff at BRHS came together to raise awareness about cytotoxic chemicals / waste and how to handle it.
They set up an information stand which ran throughout the week and was aimed at dispelling myths such as ‘you can be exposed to cytotoxic substances just by being in the same room as a cancer patient’ (you can’t)! Cytotoxic waste is the by-product of cytotoxic drug therapy administered to patients (such as chemotherapy).
Staff and BRHS visitors were invited to fill out a survey and in return were treated to a purple cupcake, donated by the food services team.
