Hear that sound? Is it something on the roof? There it goes – “stomp, stomp, stomp…”

That’s the sound of progress.

Actually, it’s the sound of a team of technicians from AWB Solar and Electric installing 360 watt monocrystalline solar panels on our roof.

When they’re done, they’ll have installed more than 1,800 solar panels, covering pretty much every available square metre of roof space here at BRHS’ Day Street Campus.

When finished in June, the 700 kilowatt system will be one of the largest solar installations on any regional hospital in Australia.

It is just one of a number of good things happening here at BRHS around environmental efficiency and sustainability.

You may have heard that from July 1 households and businesses in Victoria will no longer be allowed to dump e-waste in landfills, part of a growing effort to reduce the massive amount of e-waste that is trashed each year, at a growing cost to the environment.

At BRHS, we’re ready for the change. In fact, we’re already there.

For us, environmental sustainability is not only about doing the right thing by the planet, it’s also part of our commitment to innovation and efficiency.

We began our own e-waste recycling program in June 2018, and since then have recycled about 4 tons of e-waste through Tip Shop, a local waste reduction community enterprise.

Solar panels and e-waste recycling is just the tip of the iceberg.

There are many innovative and impactful improvements being made around environment sustainability here at BRHS at the moment, driven by the vision and extraordinary energy of our own BRHS Green Team, and the commitment of staff, managers and leaders in all departments right across the hospital.

We’ll be telling you all about those here at the BRHS Blog in the weeks to come.

That energy is one of the reasons we are really proud to sponsor the Innovation Award at this year’s East Gippsland Business Awards.

For us, environmental sustainability is not only about doing the right thing by the planet, it’s also part of our commitment to innovation and efficiency.

We are particularly pleased to highlight the creativity and innovation of those local entrepreneurs and businesses that make Environmental Sustainability a priority.

Many of our sustainability initiatives are about being efficient with resources, avoiding waste, and using creative technologies and new systems to improve how we operate.

Although proving top quality health care is our focus, as the largest employer in East Gippsland we are also very conscious of our role in the business community, and the responsibility we have to support and celebrate local businesses that are critical to making East Gippsland a terrific place to live and work.

We are particularly pleased to highlight the creativity and innovation of those local entrepreneurs and businesses that make Environmental Sustainability a priority.

In this endeavour we plan to always lead by example.
