There’s a lot of information out there at the moment about Coronavirus. What to do, what not to do.
You just want to do the right thing, but it can be hard to keep track of what that is.
So here’s a few simple points.
- If you are well and free of symptoms, continue about your daily business.
- If you’re unwell, you should be at home.
- If you have an appointment with us and you’re unwell, or perhaps have a compromised immune system for whatever reason, give us a call and we’ll reschedule your appointment.
- Wearing masks is not the best preventive measure. They play a role if you’re unwell and you need to be out and about, but if you’re well they’re not a great use of a resource in high demand.
- Limit nonessential visits to the hospital. If you do need to visit, please keep to a maximum of 2 guests.
- If you feel unwell and think you may have Coronavirus, phone your GP or the Coronavirus hotline (1800 675 398) first and they’ll tell you what to do.
- As always, if it’s an emergency, dial 000.
An important message about Coronavirus testing.
We cannot test everyone for Coronavirus.
There are strict guidelines in place as to who can be tested. These guidelines help make sure we can test those people who need to be tested, and get their results processed as quickly as possible.
Here’s the rule.
You will only be tested if:
- You have a fever (more than 38 degrees Celsius) with acute respiratory symptoms (for example, shortness of breath or cough)
- You have travelled overseas in the past 14 days before the onset of symptoms
- You’ve had close or casual contact in the past 14 days before illness with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Before coming to the hospital to be tested you must meet these criteria and have already spoken with your GP or a health professional who has directed you to get tested.
If you do come to hospital, please understand that if you do not meet those criteria, we cannot test you.
Our frontline Emergency Dept. nurses and staff are doing their best to test everyone who needs a test as quickly and safely as possible.
You can help contribute to a well-organised and safe health system by following their instructions, and being polite and respectful.
Drive-through testing is available at the hospital between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. only.
Be cool. There are rules.
If you are an employer, please don’t ask your staff to get tested if they do not meet these criteria. We won’t be able to test them.
If they are unwell, they should stay home and seek further advice from their GP or the Coronavirus hotline on 1800 675 398.
