Her commute to work?
About 4 minutes. By leisurely bike ride.
And when she’s not at work Genelle Hammond loves nothing more than exploring the stunning wilderness of the Mitchell River National Park, just a few k’s away.
For someone that loves hiking, Genelle admits she’s spoiled for choice.
In the heart of East Gippsland she’s got long, deserted beaches on one side and the magnificent Snowy River Wilderness on the other.
Genelle is a Grade 2 Pharmacist here at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service. And like many of our staff she’s a natural advert for why this small, growing and ambitious health service is a great place for young health professionals to begin and grow their career.
We are now looking for Grade 1 and Grade 2 pharmacists to join the BRHS team. Interested?

Genelle says that working in Melbourne earlier in her career gave her a great perspective on what she loves about now working in a regional hospital.
“You get to be much more involved in the whole patient journey, rather than just dispensing prescriptions and perhaps never seeing that person again,” she said. “Here, you get to know the patients, you understand and appreciate the broader picture of their healthcare journey, which I think is really important.”
Genelle added that, here at BRHS, she’s benefitted from learning and working across a number of pharmacy areas, including Oncology and Dialysis, Palliative Care, and our High Dependency Unit, rather than just being limited to a single specialty.
“My goal is to support young Pharmacists that want to grow their careers.”
Grade 1 Pharmacists have the opportunity to move up to Grade 2 in a fraction of the time it takes elsewhere.
“Career-wise, that’s been huge,” she says. “I feel like I now have a really broad and well-rounded skill set. Plus, it keeps the job interesting!”
And BRHS helped Genelle get her Masters of Pharmacy Practice.
Chief Pharmacist Margaret Griffiths says supporting the career development of people like Genelle is a priority in her team.
So much so that Grade 1 Pharmacists have the opportunity to move up to Grade 2 in a fraction of the time it takes elsewhere.
“My goal is to support young Pharmacists that want to grow their careers,” Margie says. “We have a really supportive team here, and we pride ourselves on providing an environment where growth and development is encouraged.”
“If Pharmacists want to continue to learn the profession and take big strides in their career, we’ll absolutely help and support them.”
The work is dynamic and challenging, and the setting is beautiful.
If you’re ready to take that next step in your pharmaceutical career, BRHS would love to hear from you.
Picture yourself in East Gippsland. It’ll be the best move you ever made.
