This is Shermila Jayasinghe, a consultant physician at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service.

Next month Dr. Jayasinghe will travel to the United States to spend six weeks at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she will continue her professional exploration of the global epidemic that is diabetes, and strategies to combat diabetes in communities like East Gippsland.

Dr. Jayasinghe chose the Mayo Clinic for her research trip after being awarded a fellowship by the American College of Physicians.

We have set ourselves the goal of being one of the best regional hospitals in Australia.

The fellowship was recognition of the important work Dr. Jayasinghe has already done in combating diabetes in East Gippsland, notably establishing BRHS’ Diabetes Clinic in 2018.

“The whole of Australia is impacted by the rising trend of diabetes,” Dr. Jayasinghe said. “But we know there are significant gaps in treatment and management for rural communities like ours, particularly.”

“We need innovative, and holistic, solutions if we are to reverse the trend. This trip to the Mayo Clinic will give me the chance to learn what they are doing in other places around the world, and bring those innovations back to East Gippsland.”

Dr. Jayasinghe said she is appreciative of the tremendous support she received in applying for the fellowship from her colleagues at BRHS, Dr. Kushantha Gunarathne and Dr. Marcel Van Der Heiden, and Director of Medical Services Dr. David McConachy.

Providing that kind of professional support and development is a priority at BRHS.

Dr. Jayasinghe is BRHS is just one of the talented, passionate and ambitious medical professionals that work at BRHS.
