The residents of our aged care facility, Maddocks Gardens, are this week raising money for bushfire relief with a series of speakers and events.
Today, Michael Metcalfe of the Metung CFA gave a very informative talk on the bushfires that decimated the region recently, offering a glimpse into what life was like for the many volunteer firefighters that gave so much of themselves in battling the blazes.
In addition to being part of the Metung contingent that battled fires at Sarsfield, Nicholson and Buchan, Michael also provided support to firefighters in NSW, spending five days and nights fighting the Gospers Mountain bushfire near Gosford.
After Michael’s talk, many of the residents expressed their gratitude to Michael and the many volunteers at CFA stations across East Gippsland.
At 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Maddocks Gardens hosts a speaker from the Marine Mammal Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that supports marine mammal conservation, research and education.
At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, things get musical, with a visit from the excellent “Moore Fiddling Around” Bush Band from Raymond Island.
Residents are showing their appreciation for the events by donating to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund.
And on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. in the foyer, Maddocks Gardens’ own Happy Chefs group will be selling the zucchini relish they made last week, with all proceeds donated to the relief fund.
All residents, family and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend and donate.
