Now those are some A-grade grins.
Teacher Michelle Veenstra and the “Red Group” at Westdale Kindergarten in Bairnsdale were all smiles last week as they became the first kindergarten to receive Bairnsdale Regional Health Service’s Smiles 4 Miles Award for 2020.
Smiles 4 Miles is an initiative of Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) which aims to improve the oral health of children in Victoria.
Tooth decay is Australia’s most common health problem. Smiles 4 Miles assists early childhood services to encourage and promote good oral health habits and healthy eating among children in their care.
To receive the Smiles 4 Miles Award, Westdale Kindergarten participated in a Smiles 4 Miles training session and reviewed their healthy eating and oral health policy, as well as completing a number of other tasks all designed to help their young children develop good oral health habits.
Last year BRHS partnered with 22 childcare centres and preschools right across East Gippsland on ways to encourage good oral health habits and healthy eating among children in their care.
And more and more centres are getting involved as oral health becomes a greater concern for parents and educators.
If your childcare centre or preschool would like to be involved in Smiles 4 Miles this year, you can contact BRHS’ Smiles 4 Miles Coordinator Jenna Beams by calling 5152 0222, emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, or by dropping in to BRHS’ Ross Street Campus at 48 Ross Street, Bairnsdale.
