Medical Library

The medical library is provided for staff, students and visiting medical officers to support additional studies and their work at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service. Located in the Monash University School of Rural Health Building, the library is accessible to staff 24 hours a day. A librarian is available from 0830 to 1500 from Monday to Thursday, while the hospital porter can provide access to the library after these hours.

  • Books

    Arrangement
    Books are shelved according to the Dewey system, as used in most libraries. They can be found by using the catalog which is located on the intranet (ask for help if needed!).

    Loans
    Staff can borrow any number of books for four weeks, students are limited to four books for two weeks with an option to extend the loan if no-one else wants the book. Long term loans are available by arrangement.
     
  • Manuals, Minutes and Awards
    Minutes of all policy making committees are held in the library.
     
  • Booklets in pamphlet boxes
    Arranged according to subject, which is written on the front of boxes, pamphlets may be borrowed for 7 days.
     
  • Ward and Department Collections
    All books held by the wards and departments are entered on the catalog and borrowing these items is at the discretion of the Ward Manager.
  • Journals

    Arrangement
    Printed journals are shelved alphabetically by title of the journal. Older journals are housed in the compactus. Some of the library's journals are also available online.

    The library's Serials Lists are available on request.

    Loans
    Journals are not for loan.  Please take notes, or use the photocopier.

    We do lend issues which are monographs (i.e.all on the one topic) - such as issues in the "Clinics of North America" series.

     
  • Videos
    Videos are indexed under title, subject and sequential numbering. Printed catalogues of the collection are available.   Videos can be borrowed for 7 days or viewed in the Library.

Services

  • Photocopiers
    The copiers are operated simply by pushing the button - no coins or cards are required. There is currently no charge for staff and students.
     
  • Computer services
    Four computers have been provided by Monash University for the use of all staff and students. All normal office facilities, including Word and Powerpoint, are available on computers in the library. Full Internet access is also available.

    Study areas are available for quiet study
     
  • Document supply service
    When you need books or journal articles we do not hold, we can supply them from other libraries.
     
  • Reference service
    Assistance with looking for information is always available. The Librarian will conduct literature searches for you. We can also help with the preparation of bibliographies for publications and presentations. You may use the information request form to access our reference service (or phone, fax or email the details to us).
     
  • Current awareness service
    We supply Wards and Departments with copies of the contents pages of current issues of journals. Please ask about this service.
     
  • Bookshop service
    The library acts as an agent for the medical bookseller Standish Prideaux and Pye. We can supply any book which is in print at the recommended retail price. There is no charge for postage.
